One in 23 people in Ireland, aged between 18 and 64, are new business owners. There you are, I’ve said it. I have to say, especially after what the country has been through in the last ten years, that I thought I’d ever get to write that sentence. To me it’s truly dramatic. Whether we are wannabe or reluctant entrepreneurs, a very large number of us are business owners. And as an adviser to SME businesses it’s a pleasure to welcome you aboard. We’re here to serve you.
We’re matching the US
That number, based on the just published Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2016, show that Irish people are now matching the US for levels of early stage entrepreneurship. We are now up there with the ‘home of enterprise’ and personally I think it’s a wonderful place to be. Of those surveyed in Ireland for this GEM research more than two thirds of those new business owners expect to employ people within three and a half years of their starting up. If the dreams of these new owners are realised then 40% of them will have over ten people working for them within five years. Great news for those who have just got their Leaving Cert. results.
Women are catching up
The figures are not all wonderful of course. There’s plenty of work to be done to encourage more women into running their own businesses, with just over a third of all new entrepreneurs being female (or conversely, two thirds being male). However, this is still the highest level of female entrepreneurship recorded since the survey started in the year 2000.
We know who you are
The aspiration to become an entrepreneur is highest amongst those between 25 and 34 which is great, an age cohort well represented by our ‘youthful’ staff. That’s good because if you’re keen to get into business we understand where you’re coming from and we share your pains and dreams.
Feel the fear and do it anyway
Fear of failure still stalks those dreams with that fear putting 4 in 10 off starting their own business. However, we can help get you over the worry hump. If you come and talk to us at JPA Brenson Lawlor, we can give you an honest, sector savvy, assessment of what you’d like to do. And of course, we want you to succeed to that you’ll join the ranks of the hundreds of successful entrepreneurs we call both friends and clients. We’ll help set you on the road to prosperity.
